Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Massage and Structural Integration?  Massage targets the muscle and aims to release muscular tension, stress and toxins. Rolf Structural integration, in contrast, targets myofascial system.  It focuses on long term changes in the alignment of the body and patterns of movement.  Rolf technique’s goal is integration of the whole person.  It looks to restore and improve function by looking for the source of the problem to allow lasting results.

Why the Ten Series?  As part of the Ten Series, the practitioner will evaluate how your body is misaligned to accommodate stress and physical injuries.  The Ten Series allows for a systematic postural restructuring of the entire body to address these compensations.   Each session in the Ten Series is a separate new balancing project applied in progressive sequence; each session builds upon the last until the body balances and complete integration of the structure is achieved.

Do I have to do the whole Ten Series?  Of course not, you can come for one or two sessions to see whether Rolf Structural Integration fits your needs.

How do I prepare for the Ten Series?  No special preparation for the Ten Series is needed.  Come with an open mind to explore and embrace the physical, emotional and spiritual transformations that you may experience.

What happens during a session?  Rolf Structural Integration looks a lot like sculpting, but instead of working with clay, we work with the tissue. During a session, practitioners work with hands to manipulate the connective tissue. Every session includes three elements. First is an assessment, where we look in a mirror to discern the unique patterns in your body and establish the focus of the session. Next is the actual manual therapy. At the end of every session, we integrate the work done and reinforce it with movement education.

How does the Rolf Structural Integration feel?  You may experience a warm, pleasant sensation or temporary discomfort while practitioner is applying pressure on the area that is being worked.  The practitioner will be working with you based on your needs and feedback to ensure appropriate intensity and your comfort level.

Does Rolf Structural Integration have Psychological Benefits?  While Rolf Structural Integration is primarily concerned with physical changes in the body, it affects the whole person.  Although we are physical beings we are also made up of emotions, belief systems, attitudes and behavioral patterns.  All those are related and therefore affected by physiological changes.  Alignment of physical structure is complementary to psychotherapy and personal development work.

What happens after the Ten Series?  After the basic ten series the body takes some time to adapt to the new relationship with gravity.  Once you feel this state, no other state will do.  While the results of Rolf Structural Integration are long lasting, injury or illness can reduce balance achieved previously.  Tune-up session, either after stressful events or at 6 to 24 month intervals as preventative therapy help to maintain the balance with gravity.
