About Rolf Structural Integration

Rolf Structural Integration is a manual therapy involving direct manipulation of the connective tissue.  The human body has only one piece of connective tissue - all fasciae, periostia, ligaments, tendons, etc. are continuous.  Collectively these tissues make up 20% of the human body weight and form the element of support which maintains spatial relationships amongst organs, bones, muscles and all other tissues. Rolf practitioners work with the continuity and plasticity of the connective tissue.  They know the map of this tissue and apply their analytical skills to choose where to make the most meaningful interventions to release the connective tissue restrictions.  This restores the damaged or habit-worn tissues. The human structure can then re-align and develop a new relationship to gravity.

After a complete series of 10 Structural Integration (SI) sessions, clients look taller, are more balanced, and report feeling younger, lighter and physically uplifted.

Benefits:
  • released restrictions in the connective tissue
  • reduced pain
  • restored body alignment and balance
  • improved posture, body shape and function
  • increased height
  • improved flexibility
  • restored fluid and graceful body movement
  • enhanced rapport with senses and sensuality

Who needs Rolf SI

  1. People with residual scar tissue, adhesions, or chronic postural adaptation to pain due to injury or illness. Examples: surgery, fractures, trauma, disease.
  2. People with emotional tension and psychological stress developed into patterns of held tension.  Examples:  squinting, teeth grinding, hunching of shoulders, restriction of breath.
  3. People engaged in habitual activities causing repetitive stress and unconscious postural imitation.  Examples: computer programmers, postal carriers, dancers, hair stylists, athletes, nursing mothers, musicians.

About the Ten Series

Dr. Ida P. Rolf was a revolutionary genius and a founder of the field of Rolf Structural Integration.  She devoted her life to science by first, earning her PhD in biochemistry, and then working at the Rockefeller Institute in chemotherapy and organic chemistry.

She developed her work in 1920’s and 30’s by helping chronically disabled persons unable to find remedy for their aliments. Her modern form of Structural Integration - the Ten Series emerged in the 1950’s and and 60’s and is sometimes known as “Rolfing”.

Ten Series are ten sessions of bodywork and movement education.  Each session is a bout 60 to 75 minutes in length.  Each session builds on the results of the previous one. In the first seven sessions the practitioner works though the body in a methodical fashion focusing on a specific re-aligning project or system, for example: rib cage/pelvis, feet/legs/lumbar spine, shoulder girdle/spine/plumb-line, core/legs/pelvis, core/abdomen, core/sacrum, core/cranium. The last three sessions are integrative in nature and combine the newly re-balanced body into one new whole.
